Topic 2: Campus Radio

1. What do you think of this idea? Does it seem feasible to you? Why or Why not? I think the idea is fantastic! I think it would be great for Journalism/Media students for starters and then all students for that matter. Local school news, student radio auctions, announcements, and of course a very wide variety of music. I think it is very feasible. I think it could be staffed by students per term and counted as work/school experience, and even have a small recording studio. Who says there couldn't be a poetry day, or whatever? The sky is the limit. I would take the classes and sign up. 2. What Two programs/formats/services would you recommend the station adopt in order to build loyal niche audience. Be specific, give examples.  I would certainly recommend that the station offer advertising services and of course keep it minimized which could help fund more field work such as student reporters and the like. I would also recommend the auction/trader which could help students wi

Topic 1 Music's Influence

Image
1. Describe an instance in which you or others may have tried to "protect" someone from music's "corrupting influences, " or a time when something you listened to "crossed the line" or raised the eyebrows of others. As a sophomore in high school in 1984, I was required to join the youth group of the local Christian church by my parents. Nearly the whole sophomore class in school were also members of the group which numbered about 25 of us in totality. For about a two-week period, if my memory serves me right, the church asked us to bring in a list of music we listened to and then about a week later we were all to meet a house of a rich farmer who was a deacon at the church. The next week the other youth group members met there and, as requested, brought our tapes and records. One of the songs on my record was, "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin which just so happened to be evil and demonic according to the youth minister, the pastor at

Week 8 Topic 2 Magazines

Image
1. What THREE magazines, either in print or online, have you read over the years? Write about your interest in these publications, and what they say about you and your interests? What, in particular, do you like or look for in these magazines? Cite some examples. Although I have not read any magazines in years, in the past I have read general interest magazines which include the following: Blackbelt Magazine This print magazine is about Martial Arts and I read nearly every issue from 1977 to 1993 as a subscriber so I got issues in the mail every month (which I loved). I had an interest in research of what other instructors were practicing and this is a tell of why I read them- to explore and document good ideas and training methods. In 1993 however the UFC came out and so the magazine changed it's focus on more "fighting" rather than training for self-defense and self-development. Not being a fan of people willingly beating each other into submission, I stopped r

Week 8 / Topic 1 Banned Books and your Bookshelf

Image
1. Do you see any books on the ALA list that you've read or know about? List some of them and what you thought of the book.  I saw some books that were on the ALA website list. These books were contested or requested to be made unavailable for reasons such as conflict with religious beliefs, moral beliefs, and so on. The books that I took note of were: The Holy Bible- 2013 The Glass Castle, Jeanette Walls - 2012 The Hunger Games, Trilogy, Suzanne Collins - 2011 Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck- 2003 I have no problem with the books and feel that they are good reads. 2. What's your take on limiting access to various books and other materials in public schools or local libraries? Do objections seem reasonable? Well, this is a tough question. On one hand, I think natural inoculation from exposure to bad or negative things seems plausible. I do not tell my sons what to believe. When they ask me questions, I do not tell them to read a book about what someone else said in

Will It? In this blog, I am describing, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating, and engaging an ad campaign by Forged Fitness as seen on a video on YouTube titled:  " Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Will Change Your Life ." Topic 2: Fake News

When it comes to the question, "What do you think when President Trump labels particular news stories or news companies "Fake News"? -I am inclined to say that I don't have a stance on it one way or the other. I do speculate that it is irresponsible for anyone to say that "all media" is bad. I also think it is very irresponsible to exclude all the evidence for such a claim however there may be a philosophical answer to it. I will attempt to articulate why by answering this question and the subsequent questions in relation to it as a whole rather than parts because, in my opinion, all things are connected whether those connections are apparent or loose or strong like concrete. So here I go. Every lie has a bit of truth in it and it is the president's right to say whatever he pleases. According to Lara Trump on Fox News on May 05, 2017, in and article named, "All mainstream TV networks block paid campaign ad setting a chilling precedent against fre

Week 6 Topic 1 / Newspapers

I get my local news from the Gazette Times in Corvallis online usually. Sometimes I get news from other sources too such as Google News and The Daily Barometer as well as The Corvallis Advocate. Mostly news is on the bottom of my priorities list though as I am a full time student and that takes up so much time that I often miss out on anything other than my daily hike and martial arts training which is at the top of my list. Being in great physical, mental, and emotional condition is top priority because if I don't have health then nothing else will really matter much. In so far as making sure the news I get is accurate and credible, I use a format that I borrowed from http://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2016/12/05/503581220/fake-or-real-how-to-self-check-the-news-and-get-the-facts This site is NPR's, Oregon Public Broadcasting. In her article, " Fake or Real? How to Self-Check The News And Get The Facts ," published on December 5, 2016, Wynne Davis ment

Topic 2: WIKILEAKS

1.What do you think of actions by Wikileaks? Good ? Bad? Useful? Irresponsible? I am all for Wikileaks and think that it is all good. The reason is that those in power are often funded covertly by special interest groups that need to come to the light of mainstream society. I think it is very useful for keeping the governing powers in check and giving the power back to the people. 2. EXPLAIN why you feel that way. I feel that way because I worked for many years as an undercover special investigator for ICS. During my work, I learned many things that the public is not privy to. Ever since cameras have been used on cell phones, people now get to see what many law enforcement officers do or have done because no one was/is watching. I believe in transparency, especially when it concerns government of all branches from the local level up to high GS levels. I think that the more information is leaked, the more the private sector will learn about who is doing what such as the insurance

Topic 1: First Amendment, Copyright and Freedom of Expression

1. After seeing the documentary "RIP! A Remix Manifesto," what did you find most interesting/surprising/alarming in the video as it relates to the First Amendment or freedom of expression? Please cite an EXAMPLE or two from the documentary, AND relate it to your own experience. What I found most interesting is the amount of people who believe that it is okay to steal and use someone else's intellectual property. Society today has been built by capitalism and everything is buying and selling. I really do not know anyone who does anything for free. In 2006, I actually created a system strategy called ENC or Enter, Neutralize, and Control that I used for martial arts instructional videos. I did make it open for use with the stipulation that my name was cited for its creation and development. In a few short months many people used it and pawned it off as their own work and I even saw it recently published on a Facebook page for a famous Brazilian Jiu-jitsu instructor claimi

Media Blog Project 1 / Topic #2 / Television show "Longmire"

Image
Describe   I watched Longmire on 7/15/2017 at 6 p.m. on Netflix. Longmire is an American modern Western crime drama (Genre) television series that premiered on June 3, 2012 on the A&E network. The series was developed by John Coveny and Hunt Baldwin and is based on the Walt Lonmire Mysteries series of mystery novels written by best-selling author Craig Johnson, (Wikipedia).  I watched Episode 1 after watching a preview named season 1 trailer on YouTube. The video was published on April 28, 2012. Season 1 Episode 1 The benefit of watching the show on Netflix is that there are no commercials. This season included Robert Taylor as Sheriff Longmire, Cassidy Freeman as Walt's daughter, Bailey Chase as Deputy Branch Connally, Adam Bartley as Deputy Ferguson, Katie Sachoff as Victoria "Vic" Deputy Moretti, Charles S. Dutton as Detective Fales, and Lou Diamond Phillips as Henry Standing Bear.  In this episode, Walt Longmire is running for re-election and finds

Topic 1: Twitter/Facebook and Advertising/PR & Topic 2 Persuasive Techniques

1. Using Facebook, Twitter, or another social media platform( e.g. Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, YouTube), do a search for a particular brand, product, service or cause and DESCRIBE IN DETAIL how the company or organization is using social media. Cite Examples. I did a search for Datsusara on Facebook. This company has a page that uses an eye catching logo in black and white that is geometric in design. The logo's geometric design makes use of triangles in multiple's of three and at the center there is a curved triangle which points downward that seems representative of the creative or feminine aspect. I speculate that the company used this design in an appeal to reptilian hot buttons. I speculate that since three circles are used to surround the logo that this represents boundaries and/or the balance of light and dark as white and black tones are used. This appears to be in alignment of the association principle. The company uses pictures and video's and has achieved 1

Topic 2: The Internet

Sherry Turkle talks about us becoming more "connected" than ever before, and yet we may be setting ourselves up to become more isolated. Share your thoughts on Turkle's talk, including a few EXAMPLES. Have you, your family and others "reclaimed" areas of your home, work or play for conversations--or declared those spaces device-free zones? Have you taken steps to ensure that you are really listening to others? The talk from Sherry Turkly resonates deep with me. I am glad that I watched her Ted Talk after I posted Topic 1. It is a bit refreshing to validate my own thoughts and to have some new thoughts as well. I think that where before listening to the talk, I wrote off the idea of social media completely, now I can see a few more benefits that will enhance the life of solace so familiar to me. For example, watching the Ted Talk was enlightening and yet when I think about it- it was in the form of digital media. Having information like that presented is a

Topic 1: Twitter/Social Media

List 3 people/organizations you follow and WHY.  I started up by getting an account on twitter and then followed 4 which include: Gazette Times Ted Talks Etsy Mother Earth News To be candid, I followed these first of all because I was instructed to for the assignment. Secondly, I picked them because in the past I listened to Ted Talks on YouTube, have a sellers account already on ETSY, purchase the Gazette Times on occasion, and have read the Mother Earth News magazine. I do not spend much time on social media of any type unless I am researching areas of interest. What is the best "tweet" or status update you've seen lately? In other words, what were you tempted to "retweet" or "like" WHY did that stand out to you? I retweeted , "This cabin in the mountains was hand-built using local stone and wood from the owners property". I retweeted this because I have always had an interest in promoting natural living and sustaina

Topic 2

Hello. This post is about topic 2 for JN201 Media & Society The three main sources I get my news from are CNN, The Gazette Times, and KATU News. I consider these sources as reliable because they are accepted sources of real news and the reviews of these sources is reliable enough for me. I have never heard of any grand conspiracy of these sources as being used or funded by special interest groups to control the masses. I am confident that all of the above mentioned sources provide accurate reporting of news. In so far as fake news. I am moderately concerned with fake news because of the overwhelming amount of untrue information that has had negative consequences on society collectively and because the collective consciousness of man is powerful enough to create enough massive change that could prove detrimental to the whole man spectrum. As the term "fake news" gets seen by the masses more and more, I think that at a minimum more and more people will use a more critica

JN201 - Introduction

Hello all fellow  students. I am taking up journalism to learn as much as I can about media, communications, etc. I am a lifelong student of the Martial Arts and started this in 1976. I teach private lessons on occasion and spend the rest of my time hiking, camping, travelling, and practicing primitive living skills. I specifically want to learn as much as possible in the general sense about all forms of media and focus more on learning about social media. I'm a nature lover, vegan, and simply believe in nature. I think when man messes with nature - it throws it out of balance. About 20 years ago I thought of this short story: If  I was in a ship wreck with my parents and no one survived but me at say 3 years old and I ended up on some island- what would things be like? Presupposing that I would have limited vocabulary, I might look at the ocean and not have a name for it. I might look at a tree and not have a name for it. I might look at the sky, and the same thing. I would pr
